For many American Indian students, the typical nursing program doesn’t hold much interest — they may be older, non-traditional students, are parents, need to work outside of schooling, and/or don’t want to be far from their families and communities. Thankfully, indigenous-specific programs, many supported by Indian Health Services grants, at colleges across the country (such as the University of Arizona and Minnesota State) are helping not just with financials but also culturally relevant mentoring, professional development, test preparation, and job placement.

Highest Nurse Turnover Specialties |
In 2022, the national nurse turnover rate was 22.5%, according to the NSI National Health Care Retention & RN Staffing Survey. If you’re looking to switch RN specialties to one with more job openings, you might want to check out the three specialties with the highest turnover rates — telemetry (27.1%), step down (23.7%), and medical-surgical (23.1%). At the other end of the spectrum are women’s health (17.2%), pediatrics (17.1%), and surgical services (16%). For advanced practice, patient care technicians and certified nursing assistants outpace all other nursing jobs with turnover rates exceeding 30%.

The Risk of Domestic Violence When Working From Home |
A recent study of over 13,000 cis-gender women across 30 countries showed that over 15.5% of those women experienced
intimate partner violence (IPV) during the Covid-19 pandemic. With nursing being a female-dominated profession, being a work-from-home nurse could put you in a dangerous situation by being in even closer quarters with your abuser.
Dr. Kelsey Latimer, a nurse and clinical psychologist at KML Psychological Services, says that all types of domestic violence have one thing in common: It’s about control. Whether
the abuse is physical, emotional, or another kind of abuse, if one partner is exercising control, that is cause for concern.
