Hello, Nurses! |
I have a brain teaser for you today. Letβs say your pediatric patient had a sore throat, fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and stomach pain. What would you suspect? Flu A? What if these symptoms turned into neck pain and stiffness? Or aching and stiffening arms and legs?
You may have guessed it by now, but this patient may have polio. For children infected with poliovirus, up to 5% develop meningitis, and 1 in 2000 develop paralysis in the arms, legs, or both. Before you call me βDebbie Downer,β the good news is
polio is preventable! Find out how many doses you need for 99% immunity.

Oura Ring Helps NP Catch Cancer Early |
Nurse practitioner Nikki Gooding says her Oura Ringβa smart ring that tracks a personβs health stats, like heart rate, sleep, and oxygen saturationβhelped save her life. After Gooding began experiencing night sweats and fatigue, her ring, which sheβd been using for 3 years, repeatedly warned her that her body was under stress. These notifications pushed her to
consult a doctor, who diagnosed her with early Hodgkinβs lymphoma. This is just one of many stories about smart trackers saving lives.

Titanium Heart Beats Record |
An Australian man with severe heart failure lived 100 days with a BiVACOR artificial heart, the longest recorded use, before receiving a donor transplant. With a single levitated rotor and no valves, the titanium device replaces both ventricles and pumps blood to the body and lungs. This case marks a breakthrough in heart failure treatment, though the device is yet to undergo
clinical trials (it has been tested in the FDAβs Early Feasibility Study).

Uncertainty for Pulse Oximetry Changes |
Studies show pulse oximetry devices overestimate oxygen levels in people with dark skin, which has a history of delaying care, especially during the pandemic. Efforts to fix bias in pulse oximeters face uncertainty under the Trump administration, which may stall FDA guidance aimed at improving accuracy for people in some demographics. While manufacturers support improvements, experts stress the need for stronger regulations and testing.
