I’ve heard a lot of strange remedies for insomnia over the years, but this one takes first place in the weirdness category. According to the Merck Manual from the Victorian era, giving yourself an icy blast of water in your nether-regions was the way to get to sleep quickly. Not only was this odd form of hydrotherapy great for poor sleepers, anyone who suffered from headaches, had an infection, or needed a boost in their circulation could also benefit from the practice. 

I’ll stick with my nightly dose of melatonin and the sounds that come out my white noise machine, thank you very much.

Zen Before Burnout

However, a new study in The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing found that clinicians who practiced transcendental meditation twice daily for a month saw improvements in symptoms of burnout, including better feelings of well-being and a sense of accomplishment. Fraud is Costly

Nurse practitioner Elizabeth Hernandez has been convicted of a healthcare fraud scheme — one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare and wire fraud, four counts of healthcare fraud, and three counts of making false healthcare-related statements. She is accused of defrauding Medicare $200 million by signing thousands of orders for unnecessary orthotic braces and genetic tests. She now faces up to 20 years in prison for conspiracy, ten years for each healthcare fraud count, and five years for the false statements. Masking in the Bay Area

In what will likely be a trend spreading across the country soon (at least in blue-leaning states), new mask mandates have returned to the California Bay Area. Contra Costa, Sonoma, and San Mateo counties issued mask orders for healthcare personnel in hospitals and other patient care facilities, effective November 1, 2023, through April 30, 2024. Weekly Covid-19 hospitalizations nationwide have surpassed 20,000 cases for the first time since March of this year. Some states, however, are seeing a plateau in their caseloads.
