Predicting Heart Disease Decades Early |
By measuring a personβs LDL cholesterol, lipoprotein (a), and C-reactive protein, we could potentially predict their heart disease risk 30 years in advance, a new study suggests. Involving nearly 30,000 women who were part of the Womenβs Health Study, the study found that higher levels of these biomarkers significantly increased the risk of heart attack, stroke,
and coronary heart disease. The caveat to the research, however, is that 94% of the participants were white, though we know race and ethnicity impact heart disease risk.Β

The Dangers of Sludge |
It seemed like a win-win situationβencouraged by the government, US farmers used municipal nutrient-rich sewage sludge as fertilizer for decades, helping to keep it out of landfills. But research has found that this sludge often contains toxic PFAS βforever chemicals,β which have been detected on farmland nationwide, contaminating soil, water, and livestock. While the EPA studies the health risks of these βbiosolids,β some states, like Maine, have banned fertilizer sludge and others, like Michigan, have focused on reducing PFAS in wastewater and banned sludge with high PFAS levels.

Are Potatoes Healthy? |
The most commonly consumed vegetables in the US, potatoes are sometimes considered unhealthy due to their carb loadβbut they are quite nutrient-rich. A small, skin-on potato provides essential nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, and fiber. Compared with rice and pasta, potatoes also offer a satiating source of low-calorie carbohydrates that may aid in
weight management. For diabetics, some potato varieties like Nicola and Marfona have a low glycemic index, and cooling potatoes after cooking them can lower their GI.Β
