Scorecards Rank States’ Health System Performance

The Commonwealth Fund has issued scorecards ranking states’ Health System Performance based on federal health data from 2021, the most recent available. Much of the news is admittedly bleak: preventable deaths surged in every state, gun deaths increased 23% since 2019, maternal mortality nearly doubled since 2018, and three in five teens with depression didn’t get treatment—for a start. More Job Protection for Pregnant or Nursing Moms

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you just got more rights at work this week. Two new laws took effect Tuesday: the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations related to pregnancy or childbirth as long as it doesn’t cause undue hardship, and the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act, which extends the right to breaks and private (non-bathroom) pumping places to workers not covered under the Affordable Care Act—including RNs. Explore how inclusive or not a workplace might be with the following questions: 

• What efforts have been made to foster an inclusive work environment? 

• Are there any initiatives or policies to support diverse patient populations?  

• What measures do you take to ensure safety and security for LGBTQIA+ staff in and out of the workplace?

• How do you accommodate gender identity within your workplace’s policies and procedures?

• What measures do you take to ensure LGBTQIA+ staff feel respected and heard?

• Do you have diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) educational programming for all staff?

You deserve to be safe and respected at work. Ask questions to assess if a facility would be a good fit for you.
