Good Morning, Readers!

This is my last week as part of Team TNB, as I will be moving on to my next venture. I am excited to announce that Raquรฉl Pรฉrez, a powerhouse nurse, marketer, Forbes Fellow, and TEDx speaker (check out her TEDx here), will be TNBโ€™s new interim COO and will be the new face you see every Wednesday morning.

I want to say a big THANK YOU for being a part of my journey with TNB! It has been your readership that has made this community thrive. I am so proud of the impact weโ€™ve made togetherโ€”amplifying the voices of nurses, pushing boundaries, and creating a space where innovation and community thrive.ย

The Nursing Beat has come a long way from where Tamara and I started it in our living room in San Francisco👇. TNB would not be here today without her vision and her leadership and for that, I am forever grateful.

Until next timeโ€ฆ

New Pain Med Approved

For the first time in 25 years, the FDA has approved a new type of pain medication: suzetrigine (Journavx), a non-opioid pain reliever that blocks pain signals without causing addiction. Inspired by a genetic mutation, it targets a specific sodium channel, preventing pain-signaling nerves from firing rather than dulling pain in the brain like opioids. Trials showed it effectively reduces post-surgical pain, though results for chronic pain are mixed.

Donโ€™t Fight the Fidget

Whether you unconsciously bounce your leg or click and unclick your pen, fidgeting signals your bodyโ€™s need for movement. Itโ€™s also good for your health, benefiting circulation, blood sugar regulation, focus, and stress relief. So, donโ€™t fight itโ€”embrace it to improve both physical and mental wellbeing. Experts recommend switching postural positions when you start to fidget, taking short movement breaks after every task, and walking for 5 minutes every half hour to counteract prolonged sitting. You may also try fidget toys, which some people find helpful, though their impact on focus varies.

A Potential Revolution in Autoimmune Treatment

Tiny electrical pulses via implanted vagus nerve stimulators may revolutionize autoimmune disease treatment by reducing inflammation without immune-suppressing drugs. Vagus nerve stimulators are already approved for treatment of epilepsy and depression in some people, and a new device from SetPoint Medical is now under FDA review as a potential treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Studies suggest it can slow RA disease progression, and it may have broader applications for conditions like Crohnโ€™s and multiple sclerosis.

Defining โ€œSafe Spacesโ€

This is a safe space resonates across therapy offices, yoga studios, support groups, and workplaces.ย

However, labeling a space as โ€œsafeโ€ is more an intention than a factual declaration. The term aims to encourage openness, suggesting that facilitators can handle whatever is shared without judgment.ย

Yet, this phrase overlooks the perspective of the person sharing. It's the individual, not the facilitator, who should determine the safety of a space. Declaring a space as safe without the sharer's input can undermine mutuality, as it presumes authority over their experience.ย

Genuine safe spaces emerge when the vulnerable party feels and claims safety. By preemptively labeling spaces as safe, we risk invalidating personal experiences and choices. The right to deem a space safe rests solely with the individual. The space, and its safety, are for you to define.
